In this PoC project, we wanted to utilise a 3D city model in the cityscape review of the Building Control planning permission process. A building information model is possible to embed into an existing 3D city model. In this way, we can see how the building would fit into the cityscape and the surrounding nature when built. The combined 3D city model can be used, for example, in support of an individual project planning permission process, in consultation with neighbours, and in supporting decision-making.

In this PoC project, we wanted to utilize 3D city model when hearing the neighbours in projects requiring building permits. Neighbour refers to owners and other titleholders of adjacent or opposite properties. What if neighbour hearings were conducted electronically in the future instead of by letter? You could view different illustrative material about the project through the link in the hearing letter and the presentation of illustrative material could also be experimented with using digital twin platforms.

City Planning, case: Landbo

City Planning, case: Landbo

The goal of this PoC was to study Landbo area planning principles and a local detailed plan in a 3D city model. Visual and illustrative material supports city planning, interaction, and decision-making. Landbo's planning principles will be presented to the Urban Environment Committee in spring 2023. It is possible to use the 3D city model in the city’s 3D virtual space in future presentations.

City Planning, case: Merihaka & Pihlajisto

We used the 3D city model in the planning principles of two areas in this PoC project: Pihlajisto and Merihaka. It is important to study new plans in their future context. Therefore, we imported models made by different consultants and valid plans into the 3D city model. We can also collect feedback from residents and participants using a 3D city model and improve the interaction of projects.

3D Urban Tree Database

3D Urban Tree Database

In this PoC project, two-dimensional data on urban tree assets was brought into the 3D city model. The urban tree assets include approximately 200,000 trees in parks and 30,000 trees along the streets. The three-dimensional representation of these trees enables doing analyses and simulations, which allows us to evaluate, for example, microclimate, canopy coverage, and the amount of solar radiation and shading.

Asset Management of Public Areas

The goal of this PoC was to bring the 2D register of public areas, which includes infrastructure assets such as streets and green areas, into the 3D city model. Thus, this 3D data can serve as a starting point for planning, development, and maintenance. This also enables new types of 3D analyses; for example, we can estimate the amount of solar radiation and shading and identify streets that are prone to freezing.

The goal was to improve the flow of information about infrastructural models and the management of the entire life cycle of projects. In addition, we wanted to improve the monitoring of projects and communication between the parties, as well as provide an overall picture of the city's investment projects. We also used the planning model for planning snow maintenance before the construction had even started.

Streamlining Streetwork Process

With this PoC project, we wanted to investigate how to minimize the adverse side effects of construction site, as well as improving asset management. This way, we can achieve time and cost savings. We also wanted to find out whether underground utility lines can be mapped with better quality and greater efficiency by a single surveyor and how we could produce 3D data with attribute information from the current underground utilities.

Home Street Service

We used spatial information in this PoC so that residents could find out what services or roadworks were planned near their home street. In this way, residents could see all the information they were interested in on one webpage.
