With over 8 million passengers and 300 000 trucks travelling between Helsinki West Harbour and Tallinn Old City Harbour annually, the traffic flows leading through the centrally located ports generate substantial congestion, noise and other negative externalities.
Smart mobility solutions developed in FinEst Smart Mobility project (2016-2019) have tackled these challenges by producing real-time traffic information for traffic management operators, alternative transportation for passengers and by guiding trucks to the port at right time.
Combined with sustainable mobility planning, these solutions contribute to shorter travel times, improved end-to-end experience and air quality in the port surroundings. Collaboration of Estonian and Finnish partners ensures a seamless travel experience for all the millions of ferry passengers crossing the gulf on an annual basis.
Partners: City of Helsinki in partnership with City of Tallinn, City of Vantaa, Maanteeamet, Forum Virium Helsinki and ITL Digital Lab, with support of Helsinki Region Transport, Port of Helsinki and Port of Tallinn.
The project has received funding from Interreg Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020.
