Digital Twin - experimental development project

This video reveals the background and goals of the “Digital Twin” experimental development project. In this project, we wanted to demonstrate how 3D city model can be used in a practical and comprehensive way in our services and to foster cooperation and enthusiasm! In these proof-of-concept projects, we utilised our service’s own substance data, which is connected to the service's own operational processes, which also support decision-making.

In this video, we introduce the CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment), or 3D virtual environment. This is a room where images are projected onto multiple surfaces using several projectors, creating the impression that the viewer is part of the presented material. The CAVE provides a virtual workspace for collaborative work, allowing the entire team to be inside the model simultaneously and communicate with each other.

: This experiment is a continuation of last year's PoC, where we introduced mobile applications for making service requests and room reservations. Since then, we have gathered user feedback on the applications, and they have received a new interface. Developing the application is part of our vision where Helsinki City employees can utilize the app for a variety of work tasks.

In this PoC project, we wanted to find out if drones can be used to enhance the urban surveys done by the land use planning team. We chose two common official surveys for investigation. In a location review, the planned position of a building is compared to its actual placement. Updating the base map, such as for a detailed plan uses, involves checking large areas.

This PoC involved tree interpretation from airborne laser scanning point cloud data. Single tree interpretation was performed on the point cloud to identify individual trees. Nearly 15 000 trees were found in the test area. The tree interpretation provided accurate details regarding tree height, diameter, as well as species identification distinguishing coniferous trees from deciduous ones. This project combined various street condition data sets using a method that considers their measurement time, location, and condition classification. Street condition status includes information such as longitudinal irregularities and rutting of the roadways. In this PoC, all measurement data has been compiled into one place for the first time, which helps to create a better overview of asphalt condition. This video depicts a fictional but possible drone transport from hospital to hospital. The use case is built by using a digital twin and 3D city model. Air traffic in the lower airspace above cities is already possible. In the coming years, automated and remotely piloted low-altitude air traffic will increase and expand to include logistics and passenger transport. This video uses a low airspace prototype, the development of which will continue in accordance with the principles of the EU Commission's U-space initiative for unmanned aviation.

The goal of this pilot project was to utilize information generated during the planning process more extensively in urban planning. We explored the export of detailed plan information models and the visualization of the detailed plan within the urban data model on four different digital twin platforms. The pilot was successful, providing numerous results for further development. The project will continue in 2024.

In this PoC project, we wanted to utilize 3D city model when hearing the neighbours in projects requiring building permits. Neighbour refers to owners and other titleholders of adjacent or opposite properties. What if neighbour hearings were conducted electronically in the future instead of by letter? You could view different illustrative material about the project through the link in the hearing letter and the presentation of illustrative material could also be experimented with using digital twin platforms.
